In the spring of 2022 I suffered sudden hearing loss in my left ear. As my hearing slowly returned I became hyper aware of its changing nature and began a practice of listening meditations. These drawings are an extension of that practice.
Situating myself in various gardens I attentively listen to the calls and songs of birds. Using both hands to mirror my left and right ear I responsively make marks corresponding to the sounds I hear, creating an extensive new visual language.
The drawings are based not on what I see, but on what I hear, shifting the relationship of drawing from one that is primarily eye to hand to one that is ear to hand. Weather conditions, time, date and place are noted on the front and, using an ornithology app, the birds heard are identified and recorded on the back.
Collectively these observational studies are a diaristic document of my presence in these spaces.
