An afterimage is an image that belongs to the eye, a temporary ghost image burned in the retina as an optical illusion representing what has already been seen.

AFTER IMAGE is a series of layered photographs that were created by recording still images of a projected vintage 8mm film. Using long exposures, the projected running images are reduced to burned out fragments of light that spill beyond their frame leaving only traces of their original content. The referent is reduced to the photographic materials, its light-capturing properties and the light that mediates how we view and experience photographic imagery. Many of the individuals in these films are long gone and the memory of them fades over time as they are overlaid with the new memories that we continually collect.

The video AFTER IMAGE mixes sounds and imagery in a way that seems familiar but is put together in an unfamiliar way. One is left with the sense of not being totally sure what one is looking at. The footage is edited in a manner that sets up for an anticipated but absent narration, toying with audience anticipation.

This project expands upon my interests in the relationship between light, photographic representation, its materials and technologies as well as our nostalgic attachment to them.
