Rita Maas is a visual artist whose conceptually based works playfully constructs visual imagery using photographic materials and processes. Her work often takes on reductive forms as she explores the gap between abstract and representational depiction. Embracing elements of chance and disorder, she allows her materials and processes to speak for themselves. Working within predetermined systems she aims to extend and test the traditional parameters of photography. Examining our relationship and expectations of the medium are persistent themes in her work.

Born in New York, Maas received her BFA in Photographic Studies from the School of Visual Arts. Shortly thereafter she established a successful commercial studio in New York, NY shooting award winning campaigns for major advertising and editorial clients. She later earned her MFA in Visual Arts at Lesley University College of Art and Design. Maas has acted as Visiting Professor at Rochester Institute of Technology and served as Visiting Artist and Adjunct Professor at College of Staten Island, CUNY.

Maas currently lives and works in Westchester, NY.
